1 in 8 People Battle Mental Disorders — Can Yoga Be the Hidden Cure?

Mental health conditions now silently affect millions worldwide, touching children and adults alike. According to the ICD-11, such disorders involve "a clinically significant disturbance in cognition, emotional regulation, or behaviour." In 2019, roughly 970 million people globally lived with a mental health challenge — about 1 in 8 people. The pandemic accelerated the crisis, with anxiety and depression rising over 25% in a single year. Despite available treatments, accessibility barriers and stigma keep many from care.

Ancient yogic practices offer real, complementary potential for mental wellness. Here's how yoga meets the moment.

Understanding the Most Common Mental Disorders

  1. Anxiety disorders — affecting 301 million people in 2019, including 58 million children and adolescents. Excessive worry and fear disrupt daily functioning.
  2. Depression — impacting 280 million people. More than temporary sadness, it brings hopelessness, low energy, and sleep disturbance.
  3. Bipolar disorder — around 40 million people navigate swings between manic peaks and depressive valleys.
  4. PTSD — common after trauma, generating nightmares, flashbacks, and hypervigilance.
  5. Schizophrenia — affecting 24 million people, producing delusions, hallucinations, and fragmented cognition.
  6. Eating disorders — about 14 million cases, potentially fatal, affecting body perception and nutrition.

Why Is Mental Health Support Still Inaccessible?

Despite therapy and medication, most people remain untreated. Research suggests only about a third of people with depression — and fewer than 30% of those with psychosis — receive professional help. The main barriers:

  • Social stigma and discrimination
  • Insufficient resources and too few qualified practitioners
  • Economic limitations

Yoga: An Ancient Solution for a Modern Crisis

Yoga is often seen as exercise, but its foundational philosophy emphasises mental calm and integration of body, mind, and spirit. Modern research substantiates its capacity to ease stress, lower stress hormones, and restore emotional balance.

1. Anxiety and depression relief. Pranayama and meditation activate the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering cortisol and quieting mental turbulence.

Regular yoga practice can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety by up to 50%.

2. Stabilising bipolar mood swings. Techniques like Chandra Bhedana (lunar breathing) and Yoga Nidra foster emotional equilibrium.

3. Managing PTSD. Trauma-informed yoga emphasises safe, gentle movement and body awareness, helping survivors reconnect with the body in protective environments.

4. Schizophrenia support. Though never a replacement for medication, basic asanas, mantra (including Om meditation), and structured practice can provide grounding.

5. Combating eating disorders. By highlighting what the body can do rather than how it looks, yoga nurtures acceptance, self-compassion, and mindful eating.

6. Neurodevelopmental support. Rhythmic movement and breath exercises help manage overactivity and strengthen concentration in ADHD and Autism Spectrum conditions.

Yoga Tools You Can Start Today

  • Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) — harmonises the brain's hemispheres and settles the nervous system
  • Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep) — deep guided relaxation that resets emotional disruption
  • Surya Namaskar (sun salutation) — dynamic movement that releases endorphins and lifts mood

The Missing Piece in Mental Health Care?

Mental health conditions are an escalating public health emergency. Professional care remains fundamental — but yoga empowers individuals as active participants in their own restoration. If you or someone close to you is struggling, consider weaving yoga into the healing approach alongside conventional support.
